I was fortunate enough to be invited by Team Lowrance SA’s local angler James van Rooyen, to have a ‘sneak peek’ at the new LSS-1 Structure/Down Scanner by Lowrance. This took place yesterday the 14th Sep 2009 at Inanda Dam, KZN.
The most powerful aspect of the LSS-1 that hit me was the DownScan, with its crisp detailed images of the cover, such as grass, weed, brush and trees. I have spent an immeasurable amount of time behind my conventional down looking echo sounders learning to understand and interpret what I see on the screen. But with DownScan, there is no need for interpretation, a tree looks like a tree, down to the finest detail. Each branch can be identified, and if fish are holding in these branches, they too are just as easily recognized.
When a technological breakthrough like DownScan is introduced to a sport like bass fishing, the most profound effect it has, is to give the entry to intermediate level anglers a boost of confidence second to none. When fishing with an experienced guide on a body of water, the most important piece of information you going to get from him, is Fish Location! He has spent many years fishing those waters and knows where to catch them, and as long as you tip him well – he will put you on to those fish. Now, with DownScan you are effectively your own Pro Guide i.e. you can drive around and find the cover yourself, identify the cover with ease, and see if that specific piece of cover is holding fish, and if so – where in relation to the cover are the fish holding. If I was an advocate, that would be my closing statement and I would return to my seat – “Case Closed!”
Welcome to a New World of Fishing, and it’s called DownScan, by Lowrance.
