    Question Licensing Requirement - Jonboat

    Okay,

So some of you have seen my thread on the "Jon Boat" project.

Now, myself & Budso would like to know what is the official requirements regarding licensing for this boat. If anyone can provide the official answer, it would be great.

Do we have to do a skippers? Do we need to do a buoyancy?

Let me provide some more information to complete the picture.

    1. The Boat is for inland use only (Dams / Meres)
    2. The Boar is approximately 3.2m in length and 1.3m in width
    3. We are planning on using an outboard

We do not necessarily want to do a skippers, so we would like to stay under the power limit for the outboard, where do we pull the line, 10HP / 15HP?

We live in Benoni, near Homestead dam & Rynfield.

Your input would be greatly appreciated !

15hp or less you don't need a skippers or COF, but you do need to do bouyancy. Talk to Innot on the site to sort you out with a legal/licenced trailer.

    Thank you Duritz,

This makes out life much easier, now we just need to figure out this damn bouyancy thing,
it is giving us big headaches.

We don't know how to calculate that 30% everyone is talking about.

We want to use pool noodles, but we don't know how to calculate how many we need etc. and if we will get the cert with using them...

    Help?

You have to use the special noodles made of the foam they use for bouyancy. Also with new legislation it has to be done by an approved person, so unfortunatly you can't do it yourself anymore. Maybe talk to someone that is approved (most boat shops will do it or know someone who does), before you go much further, it might be cheaper now before you have decks and things in the way. Hope this helps
