reason this would be nice is i could put the other temp cable in the livewell and see the temp on my ff screen. i could set temp alarms, and know the temp difference of the water in the livewell and at the dam water. i could then know if was going to cool or heat up the water by adding new dam water to the LW...

THOUGHTS? :)

Started using this awesome new product from Angler innovations and thought I'd share a bit...

Having teamed up with Rob for the BETT KZN season and having to transport my rods and reels around a lot, I decided to invest in a Rod Jacket and give it a bash. I have been using the Stick Jackets paired with a reel cover, but found that some of my eyes on the rods would get bent and damaged (also noticed that the Stick jackets would rub off paint on eyes)...not sure if it was due to all the carting around etc., but I had to solve the problem as my Cumara and Steez rods weren't liking the abuse that much...

<a href="http://www.bassing.co.za/bassingforum/attachments/forum25/7197d1337259929-6.jpg" title="Name: 6.jpg

Luckily Wayne from Outdoor365 had the answer and told me about the Rod Jacket. I decided to spend some cash on 1 and try it out...needless to say I am in the process of acquiring more for all my rods including Spinning outfits.

<a href="http://www.bassing.co.za/bassingforum/attachments/forum25/7198d1337259998-3-1.jpg" title="Name: 3-1.jpg

This product is great..it is all 1 piece and made from neoprene material which is waterproof, dustproof and fairly hook proof. I've had it on for over 2 months now and am yet to find any damaged eyes or tips. This product also covers your reel which keeps out all the nasty stuff like dust etc. and are available in all sizes... Give it a bash guys, I can promise that you won't be disappointed and for roughly the same price as a Stick Jacket and reel cover...you can't go wrong.

<a href="http://www.bassing.co.za/bassingforum/attachments/forum25/7200d1337260057-2-1.jpg" title="Name: 2-1.jpg

I know some guys with a 4x4 have custom-made mudflaps made from conveyor belting and when travelling with the boat, they simply slide the mudflaps into place and this helps a lot.

I found a site with an idea that could perhaps help prevent those chips you get on the hull from stones etc. Ok it may not look nice but hey - use netting that is the same colour as your boat maybe?

Superior Boat Trailer Rock Guards | RockGARD

What do you guys use? Or do you "hope and prey" you get no damage?

But now comes the rub… you find all these new and exciting baits that really work and you have to take pictures and tell people about… after all that’s the “quit pro quo”… so no longer can you keep these secrets that give you that advantage… I guess the positive of that is you keep trying new products and rigs to look for an advantage and that’s actually great for your fishing.

After being a plastics fisherman only fishing mainly CBC and Mojo I now fish Jigs, Cranks, Topwater, Frog, Swim Jigs, Shaky Head, Lipless and Frog… I still have to get my head around Spinnerbaits.

A new product to look out for in the shops soon is the Coontail Worm from Big Bite Baits. It’s signature bait designed by Russ Lane. Russ designed the Coontail so that the centre core waves thru the bait rather than being in a straight line. This helps with the action and allows it to be rigged for the hook point to have maximum action. It also features a bulb tail which increases the action.

He took in consideration how the bait had to sit on the hook and how the hook point had to come out of the bait easy to get the best hook penetration to up your odds in getting more bass out of heavy cover.

The Coontail is 4.75 inches long and comes in 10 different Big Bite top fish catching colours. I just wish I had some already to test at Goedies tomorrow!

I was looking to get a reel to throw my cranks with and investigated the ratio thing a bit.The point i want to make is that the ratio really tells you nothing in terms of how much line you are retrieving per one turn of the handle. They classify is as (Inch per turn) IPT .Some reels is a 5.5 : 1 but takes more line than a 6,3 : 1 for example. It all boils down to the spool diameter.

I looked in South-Africa and the slowest on the shelf shimano is the Culcatta series and clocks in at i think 23 IPT.But found a site in America that sell a Calais 200 APV,it is a 17 IPT, 5 : 1 Ratio ,perfect for those cranks. It should be here next week.

Just sharing and educating those that did not know it!
O.K so I am fishing Klipkopje Dam last weekend in the Swartfontein area, we have been having a really good day, no monsters and no dinks, all the fish were around 1-1.5kg for the morning. We probably caught about 16 or so of them, so just before we decide do get off the water (promised the pregnant other half we will be back before lunch), I cast into the reeds...put my rod down...light a smoke...take a swig of fanta grape...pick up my rod...

Line goes thud...slack...moves to the side...I think nah...dink...wrong...rod bends all the way to the cork...u-turn...heads for the boat...2kg's maybe?...jumps next the boat and I realise this is way past 3kg, even past 4kg'skg's...thought it wanted my 2lt bottle of Fanta Grape...wouldn't put it past him cause I am sure it would be able to get it's mouth around it...

One last hard run of about 6m in what felt like a second...a funny sound...a very funny sound...that sound of the hook ripping through bone or something...you guessed it...fish off...by the way this would have been my PB...

Just can't shake that feeling...what did I do wrong...could I save the loss if I did something differently...is there a medicinal cure for what happened and if not what to do...can't stop thinking about that one that got away...it's like poison in my blood...

Not a nice feeling...it's ruined my week so far...

OK so this is not really fishing related but it can be… I want to tell you a short story about saving money every month which you can of course put towards boat maintenance, petrol and a tackle fund.

For those of you with families and dependants that have life insurance and dread disease cover (especially the over 40’s) and are smokers this is for you. What you may or may not know or your broker hasn’t told you as a smoker your premiums are loaded… and loaded heavily.

My broker came to me and said I would save at least R3,000 a month on premiums if I gave up smoking… so that’s R3,000 plus the R2,000 it costs in smokes… give up a stinking habit, feel better and have an extra R5,000 of disposable income? Add to that a nagging wife who gave up a year ago and the incentive was great to kick the habit.

I got a prescription for Champix (R250 odd per month) and started the course… you smoke for the first 8 days or so of the course and then you stop… when you have the motivation I had then with the help of Champix it’s relatively easy to kick the habit! You of course have to WANT to give up because I still think the mind is 70% of the battle.

Suffice to say it’s now two whole months of not touching a cigarette and I had my blood test last week to prove to the insurance companies that I had quit… they gave me the all clear and sent my broker quotes for the changes in premiums! My monthly saving in premiums is R6,000! Every time I feel like a smoke (Like after catching a pig at Albert’s or having a drink or first thing in the morning with coffee) I think of the premium saving of R6,000, the cost of smokes R2,000, the bad cough I used to have and the nagging wife and the craving goes away! Added benefits are my sinuses issues have improved and I no longer snore every night!

The only negative is that everything tastes different and I can’t eat or drink some things that now taste funny…. Oh yes and smokers stink!

But the benefits outweigh the negatives by a long shot! Just hope I can stick with it!

As a lot of you know Murray park is my local water and i have been keeping a close eye on the developments there. Inside Murray park the grounds is still maintained in the sense of grass been cut but that ends at the small bridge at the inlet. 8 Weeks ago there was some people in there taking measurements of the grounds. Last Friday after a short session i had a chat with the security there and i was informed that through the course of last week soil samples were taken. This tells me that there will be building taking place there but what they plan on building there i do not know yet. Monday past i found out that the person in "charge " is a Mr Dlamini at our local municipal office's. Trying to get hold of him and see if i can get a bit more info on what they are planning.

The dam that runs into Murray park has been closed of entirely on the one side by a housing complex of which the residents is the only one's that have access to that front of the dam. I hope and pray they are not planning on going the same route.

Should i get to have a chat with Mr Dlamini i would like to know if this dam is still going to be accesable to day visitors-Especially our fisherman.

Should there be any of you out there that has some tips regarding how to approach this matter or other questions i should ask this man then please share.

Murray park can not compete with our large dams across SA but i believe for its size it holds an abundance of fish and also some decent size fish. I for one would not like to see this dam go to ruins.

Joe Cinadr, Frank Paden, and Craig (?) - Frank had to leave Craig took his place on Tuesday.

As usual the weather played a key role in the success of the trip. While fishing the islands we are protected and have good access to all of our best spots except for one direction - Northeast. Of course we had strong Northeast winds for the first 3 days. This wind resulted in waves that were 3 to 5 feet. All of us went out.

Also weather related is we had thunderstorms just about everyday. So at times we were racing from one island to another or just pull out altogether.

The fishing has been fair. The walleye guys were putting on clinics and coming in with limits after just a few hours out. The Smallmouth were somewhat slower.

Most of the guys got fish fairly soon. In fact a lot of us had one or two fish just leaving the harbor. But right away Mike and I noticed the size and the numbers of fish weren't what we were used to. Normally we get a lot of 4, 5, and 6 pound fish. We also rarely see any of the really small fish yet we did see a larger percentage of 1 to 2 pound fish than ever before.

We had hoped for a Walleye fry but we actually didn't get any walleyes until the third day and John Zaborny had already left. A few of us targeted walleyes for the fish fry but when we headed out into the main lake (no man's land we call it because of the lack of Structure) we couldn't connect. We saw fish on the sounders but couldn't get them to bite. We did catch walleyes while just fishing for smallmouth but never did anyone catch them deliberately trying for them.

I'm not certain the numbers we caught in total. I know John Bales and David Bishop ended up with 65 Smallmouth, 3 walleyes, and numerous Drum. Mike and I had about the same although we caught more drum and 2 walleyes.

I was most concerned with how Rick and Brett were going to do but I didn't have to. They out fished most of us, caught the biggest Smallmouth of the trip (5.5 pounds) and just pounded Lake Erie until it gave them what fish were available. I am still smiling.

Anyway this year there were less pictures taken in my boat because we just didn't get that many big fish. I was also going to try to take some video but because the waves kept coming over the bow, I was reluctant to set the whole thing up to get wet. Maybe next month at the Detroit River I can get some video...

I created a collage of pictures that I will post when I get home this afternoon. While the trip was slower for fish than what we were hoping, it has been worse in the past. But when we were all together for dinner that was the best time and what I will remember most.

Thank You all for coming! Hope to see you next year.

Top water bites were almost non existant and the frog was totally ignored. Some El grande Laminates saved the day and coloured that worked was dirty sky and the tilapia imitations.

Below some feedback from my guest.

Just a very short report on our (me and my dad) trip to Renosterkop with C'est La Vie Bass on the 12 May 2012.
We left for Renosterkop in the early morning and research the dam at 6:45, and we were fishing just after 7:00. This was my first experiences on a bass-boat and a lake on this magnitude, what an experience it was. The fishing was a bit slow but still the fishing was great. Those fish are not normal-aspirated they are either turbo or supercharged.
Ben from C'est La Vie Bass went out of his way so we could enjoy our day and we did. Ben is an amazing host and a great teacher we learnt so much from him and he was eager to answer any questions we had (which was a lot).
I know this is a very short report but I can highly recommend a day out with C'est La Vie Bass.

<a href="http://www.bassing.co.za/bassingforum/attachments/forum11/7177d1337105273-img-20110712-00085.jpg" title="Name: IMG-20110712-00085.jpg

Majority will probably choose Mon-Thursday, but let's see.
Times - probably 7pm till late
Let's try for the first one next week sometime ......

As you know not everyone can be catered for, i.e. everyone has their own lives ....... so "MAJORITY RULES". Please don't be upset if you want to join and the majority rules in favour of a night you cannot make it.

You can vote on more than one choice, in case you have 2 or 3 nights that are OK with you.

If the vote is close for two different nights, we will make a chat night on the one evening, and then another on the other evening to try and get as many guys in on the chat.
