    Default 21/03/2010 Bronkies

So i decided to head out to Bronkies for some float tubing on a long weekend despite the warnings from Craig. My initial plan was to head over to a nice drop off with some reed and weed beds and just fish that for the day. On arrival at Kai Manzi i had to rethink the plan as to get where i needed to go would require me to cross the dam and the boat traffic was bad !

I decided to go left of the launch area and just fish the jetties, My main goal was to try different baits and maybe get some confidence in Jigs. So i attached a Jig that was trimmed in all the places it needed trimming and i got some good Craw creature baits as trailers.

First jetty i was able to get right close and even under it to pitch right at the back and worked the jigs as directed but reading all articles and post etc. 3rd cast and Bam I'm in and a nice fishy took photo released foosh and 3rd cast after that Bam, in again this continued for about 20 mins and 5 fish later then jig got snaged on a cable or something and i lost the jig and clever me had no more jigs

Now that i know jigs work and i know plastices are tops i have two choices to select from when fishing,

Total fish caught for the day was 18-25 lost count,
    Time fished: 08-00 - 14:30,
    All fish where between 500g - 800g,
Weather was fair in the morning and turned overcast in the afternoon ending with some rain.

nothing bigger Those bigger fooshies really don't like me much. I am sure my piggy will come one day ... On a side note it is really very safe to tube along the jetty when there is a lot of boat traffic, as long as you don't go accros the dam

Great report back Wes, glad you had a good day on the water and lots of tight line.

It just boosts that confidence when you catch fooshies.
Gone fishin', be back at dark-thirty!

Bummer, make a home-made lure retriever, or get a BPS E-Z lure retriever (on the Rod and Marine website), might save you a few jigs and other lures that get snagged .......

Thanks for the replies everyone. Ja jigs are new to me, but i see a good future for them in my arsenal of baits. I think of a jigs as hard plastics with a girly skirt I do hope that jigs will produce my bigger fish that have been evading me for so long now. PB- 1.2kg and i just can't top it ! catching fish is not the problem it is the size that is the issue cause size does matter

    Hi Wesley

Jigs can be fished like you fished them and darn effectively too. If you have a nice profile jig (slim tip getting gradually wider) you can even pitch into tiny holes in the treeline and get fish. Same goes for grass, you want as little as possible that can snag up.

However, I just love rock fishing. Other applications expose my one major weakness, my inability to pitch like a pro. I am an aspiring branch manager (always in the trees), a bushman of note (always), and a sometimes bank manager too..... With rock fishing, I cast, let it fall, and then fish the ledges, drops, and changes in the cover line too. I use an All Terrain football head (other makes are great as well). I mostly use the 3/8th ounce and use the trailer to determine bulk and fall rate.

So Wesley, get a handful of different jigs and use sheer logic to determine which jig for which application. The grass jigs are profiled to slip through the grass, pitching jigs for trees are beefy with strong hooks, rock jigs have a football head which keeps them upright but in turn, the wide head would be a pain in the grassy areas.

Jig fishing is awesome. It is NOT always successful but when it is on, you will get an above average bag (I really believe that).

Awesome result there. Well done. I am far from being a great angler myself but I have to thank people like Mark (Vaalboy) and Howard (Bassboy) for getting me into jig fishing.... (there are others, too many to mention)
Have a great day at the water

Thank you BigB for the information supplied with the humor(I had a good chuckle). I am not a crank bait person and don't think i will try it soon. I have now got great advice from different people on how to use jigs and having a 'bait bag' of jigs and plastics i can't see how one can go wrong. My main aim now is to become Extremely proficient with these baits and maybe i can move up the fish size and maintain a good average. It is all rather exciting !

    Hi Wesley
Seems like we both had fun at Bronkies this past weekend...
We were fishing Texus rigged plastics and I found that most of the takes happened on the drop, so basically they were reaction bites. Was this the sort of pattern you also experienced too while fishing jig etc?
