    Default Wheel bearing question?

I have just fitted axle mate to my trailer, however being "slightly" technically challenged have the following question:

How hot/warm are the hubs supposed to be under normal conditions?

I used to touch the grease caps after a trip and they would be mild and warm. After having the new product installed I travelled to Inanda (30km's) and touched the hub and it was very warm. Is this normal? I had new bearings fitted at the same time having the product installed.

    Marcus,
Start by asking yourself what changed?
    1) New bearings
    2) Fitted axle mate

    Now consider the following:
Axle Mate is only supposed to be a resevoir of grease under pressure, meant to keep a constant supply of grease on the bearings. Not much that can go wrong?

Having a new set of bearings fitted is most likely your problem (was it done by the same guy that fitted your electric plug? lol). Jack up your trailer (one wheel at a time) and check if there is a small amount of play on the wheel. If you spin it it should be completely free running. It should even have a bit of play if you wiggle it from side to side. If this is not the case, take your Axle Mate of, remove the splitpin and loosen your wheel nut half a turn. Make sure there is enough grease (not too much) around your bearing. Replace the splitpin and Axle Mate. Do the same test now. Repeat on other wheel.

Once you have completed this process, your hubs should not be running hot.
I'll send you my account details for this piece of technical advice...lol

Problem is the bearings, usually if new should run a little hotter on first trip and then settle. If it continues the bearings must be reset as it is too tight.
I can assist if you need and make the adjustments Vaalboy, just let me know and bring your trailer around to my place, should take 30min.

All sound advice from all parties

May I also offer this advice:- As you know Mark I am a Thermographer, and one of the most common problems with new bearings getting hot, is because of over greasing. I don't know what pressure that spring puts on the grease forcing it into the bearings, contact the manufacturer.

Thanks for all the input and advice guys. Rob popped out this morning and checked everything out. It appears that just the nuts were a bit tight.

It's great to see that Rob has taken the time & effort to check things out for himself and I wish him success with his product.

Oh yeah we've all heard this before:
3 guys have a beer together and discussing whoes profession is the oldest (NOT what you are thinking!!) The doctor said "well after God created Man he created Woman by removing a rib from Man, therefore medicine must be the oldest profession"
The Accountant said "Hang on, before God created Man he created the earth and in the Bible it is written first there was chaos and then calm, therefore ecconomics must be the oldest profession"
The engineer responded "and who do you think caused the chaos??"
