Because this past weekend met some oaks on a floatube catching bass said they had caught smallies but looked axactly like lagemouth colour and everythng just the mouths seem little smaller so could this be also a form of small mouth?

Must admin, I also only know of the one species. Have never seen another type being caught not even watching KVD in action, always just the brown ones.

Did they take a photo maybe?

I know some smallies in Kwaggas aren't brown with the stripes, well not as pronounced anyway, but I think that has to do with the water colour... Rebeltoppie is the one to ask though

small , smallmouth and largies look pretty much the same when they very small.easy to see the diff when over 10cm.have never heard of spotted bass up in jnb.they wont even know the difference.lol

but serious they close to smallies and do very well in river.havent heard of many dams containing them.

as for the smallies they not really suited for jnb side.all the dams which had smallies is very low in stock.

Only one type of smallmouth bass, but colour can change in one dam, because of bottom differences. At Kwaggas as well as Clan some smallies will be bronze with definite vertical stripes(rocky areas) while others will be more plain brownish colour as they stay in the clay areas.
I see a huge difference between smallies and largies even when they are 60mm long.
Spotted bass looks more like largies than smallies.
In smallies the corner of the mouth is in front of the eyes and with largies behind the eyes, but bar that there is a big colour difference as well as tail size.
Smallies have larger tails than largies (size for size)
Last but not least, you WILL know when you have a smallie hooked!

Smallmouth versus largemouth bass - identification

Distinguishing small mouth bass and large mouth bass
To tell small mouth and large mouth bass apart, look at the closed mouth. If it extends back beyond the back of the eye, the fish is a largemouth. If it goes only to the middle of the eye, it's a smallmouth.

Another theory is that it is a Northern strain / Florida starin Hybrid. The result is bass that grow fast and big, but they have smaller mouths than the pure northern or Florida strain.

And then is the "meanmouth bass" that is a Smallmouth / Largemouth or Smallmouth / Spotted bass Hybrid...known to attack swimmers!!!!!!!!

Here is a pic of a 6lb Meanmouth!!!!

    Regards

    Herman
