We are pretty up to speed in the forums on the latest technology in reels etc. But what about those old reels that are still going strong today? How far can we go back here?

I got 2 Team Diawa 103PVA Baitcasters that’s still running 100%, got them in 2001

I have not been a serious basser for too many years, but my 'Golden Oldie' is my Team Daiwa S 100Hi infinite 5 Bearing baitcaster, on a Shimano Catana 6'6" medium rod.
Some of my fondest memories with this rod and reel:-
1. My very first fish over 3kg's at Albert Falls Dam, West street corner 1998 on a watermelon zoom lizzard.
2. It also got me an awesome Dorado off the Aliwal Shoal on a clouser fly.
3. And my son Connor's PB in the ESA BETT 2007 at Albert Falls in the Centre trees on a DLN.

I have a 1981 Shimano Bantum 100 as shown in the photo (thanx to Google images). I use this on my spinnerbait rod as it has a very slow retrieve ratio and it casts like a bi$%h. It is very reliable and easy to service too.... The only drawback is the cast bar (or button in this case) on the side of the reel...

I lied, may be a 1987 version Shimano Bantam 100. I will take some nice photos tonight and post them. The following site has schematic diagrams for most of the reels for those maintaining their own reels.

I have another site with reel schematics in my favourites on my home pc which is more comprehensive. I will post that tonight too...
This is a lovely subject - I have some pretty old stuff in my fishing gear that have been part of my love affair with fishing for years!! The first one comes to mind is my faithfull Pen Jigmaster (now retired) but still in perfect working condition. I bought this little number when I was still a schoolboy and the box still bears the price I paid for it in 1965 - R12.50. I recall that was my entire holiday allowance
. I then bought two Roddy 8000 spinning reels from Anglers Corner for R 1.95 in about 1970/71 - they were on special left hand wind only. These reels have accounted for many estury fish such as spotties, kob, skipjack a kingfish or two and quite a few leerfish and others. I started flyfishing for trout in 1972 and I aquired a Hardy Jet flyrod 7 wt and my first reel was an Intrepid gearfly loaded with a floating line. A year later I found another gearfly to which I loaded a 7 wt sinking line. I used this rod & reels for 20 years before pensioning them off for more modern and lighter gear when I moved to East london in 1992. Both reels are in their original boxes pretty tattered and torn now

Sounds like you are a real old Fisho Rod, no wonder Mark is such a good angler today, and the gene has been passed to Cameron as well!!![]()
