Default New Rod n Reel setup

    Hey-ya.

I am looking at getting myself another rod and reel. I have a 6ft M setup at the moment, and would like to get a 7ft MH.

I like the Clarus, and the Loomis and Franklin 7ft MH's. (felt them at fishing specialist). But i was wondering about the Bass Pro Shops Tourney Special rods, from Rod and Marine. I read some good reviews on the rods and they are well priced..R400, I just dont know about ordering a rod from Pretoria and it getting here safely through the post, AND if im going to get charged extra because it is big and cumbersome.

As for the reels, i like the Bass Pro Shop Pro Qualifier, read amazing reviews on this puppy, so ja. And this will be fine in the post!

Can u guys suggest any other options and/or places to buy this stuff in Cape Town maybe. And has anyone ever ordered from Rod and Marine?

    Tx

    PEACE

Speaking from experience, the Clarus is one great value for money rod. I have about five of them and use them regularly. The reel also looks great and I have been most impressed with the BPS Tournament reels I purchased recently for around R 400-00 a piece.

I purchased my SI from Rod and Marine and service was great. Just insure the package if you are concerned about breakage or loss.

There are a lot of good rods out there. There are also a lot of great rods out there and there are a few lemons.

I have stopped talking brands and just suggest to buy the best you can afford. Shimano, G-Loomis, Fenwick, Steez are all good products and would recommend them. Personally I fish with Fenwick matched up with Quantum reels by choice but also have many different Rods and reels that are nearly as good. The only real Lemon I came across was Loomis and Franklin two pieace rod that snapped at the join whilst fighting a fish.

Wow thanks for the new contact, these rods and reels look pretty nice! Heard a lot about the Bass Pro Shops stuff but did not know where to get it in SA.

I suggest you get the goods delivered to me in JHB. I will do a quick "test run" on the equipment, and if any good I'll send it down to my Mom in CT.

Default Looking to buy rod and reel

    @RUFFNEK - PLS SEE BELOW

    Hi Guys,
I'm also looking to buy some semi-decent rod/s and reel/s (new or used), and would like your guys' suggestions pls if possible.

I'm looking to do more fishing from my father in law's bowrider boat on the Vaal, and perhaps looking to join someone on a bass boat every once in a while. So I'll be looking for a combo that will be used mainly on a boat, and from what I have been reading, I will need a "flipping / pitching" rod? Perhaps a 7'6" or similar, with a baitcaster reel?

    I currently have 3 combinations:
    - 1 spinning combo Daiwa Megaforce 6'6" & spinning reel
    - 2 x 6'6" bass rods with finger/trigger grip, both MH, 1 is Fast action (Shimano Scimitar graphite with Shimano Calypso baitcaster), other is Medium action I think (Daiwa Sweepfire 2-piece 662MHRB* with an el-cheapo Banax baitcaster). Both with lure weight 3/8-1oz, both for 10-20lb line.
    * What's the "RB" stand for???

I'm still starting out, so I am looking to spend around R800 for a rod and reel combo, if that is possible.

What can you guys with the bass boats suggest I buy pls?

I hear the Bass Pro Shops reel that Vaalboy mentioned on this site a week ago for R400 is not bad, I may consider getting one of those (but rather the Daiwa Megaforce baitcaster reel Ruffy advertised a while back, if he still has them?) - but what kind of rod would i need to look at for the boat or for pitching? And what line should I buy for it?

What about this Bass Pro Shops Tourney Special IM-7 Graphite Rods - Trigger that BMNP mentioned - are they any good?
    Rod and Marine
(Available in 7' Medium Action, 7' Medium Heavy Action, and 7'6 Heavy Action. All are R400 - Is this in line with what I need?)

ALTERNATIVELY, IF YOU GUYS HAVE ANY USED RODS / REELS IN THIS CATEGORY THAT YOU'RE THINKING OF SELLING (IN GAUTENG PLS!), PLS LET ME KNOW?

Thanks for your assistance in advance, much appreciated!
    Paul

Hi Vaalboy, how much is this Clarus rod you mention? Is this in the pitching / flipping range I need?

There are a number of different rods for different applications, however I use the 7ft MH for most applications. They used to cost around R450-00, not sure what they are now though.

Thanks, that's not a bad price. I heard of guys talking about their R1800 rods so R450 to start off is not too bad.

    Thanks for the input!

Paul I have a Shimano Crucial 7.6MH paired up with a Shimano Curado that you may try. It isn't for sale but your welcome to use it for a weekend or two to see if you like it. It's a bit out the price range you mention (Rod R950, reel R1600) but if you like it you know what you should be aiming at. A lot of people also prefer using a 6.6ft rod for flippin and pitching but I prefer a longer one, at the end of the day it will be you preference but at least you will be able to try something before you buy.

The only condition as per usual, you break it you replace it ;-)
