    Default Rustdewinter BETT 4july

Left home at 3:15 am,thought it was gonna be freezing like the previous week at the vaalriver,so i wore for the first time in my life LONG JOHNS....lol.We arrived at rustdewinter just past 5am.What a pleasure,no traffic jams...nothing.We got a lekker parking, took our time to get sorted....very relaxed....after a long time. Our only downfall was drawing tag no 35.Anyway our starting point was gonna be the 14ft grass edge....here we fished for about a hour without even a nibble. We then headed towards the river, and decided to fish the rocky banks on the left hand side, here we got our first keeper of about 700grams.Fishing those banks for another hour we decided to move to the spillway in the main dam. Here we got another keeper on a splitshot wat/red fluke and a few dinks on the dropshot. Now what to do?we then moved to the entrance of pilon bay and caught my personal worst in 20ft deep on a dropshot rigged thin senko..lol.We decided to go to the salad bowl, here i got a nice fish of about 1,1kg on a spinnerbait and my partner got 1 on a lake fork ring fry fished weightless.THE last part was the most dissapointing for me as it costed us BIGTIME....i came to one of my favourite areas and got busted up SIX times on a texas rigged super fluke....EISH!!! dubbel eish.We fished right up to the last 10 minutes and guess what? when we decided to leave to go weigh in our scrap of 3,11kgs....the main motor wouldnt start I ripped the seat out found 2 wires and briged them from the trolling motor batteries to the main motor battery ...after a minute she cranked and was on our way.We had 30seconds left...my partner ran on water...lol and managed to get our tag intime.A very big dissapointment for us as we were hoping to get atleast a 6kg bag.Our next venue is driekoppies and we gonna need all the help we can get, because from what i believe a 10kg bag would be peanuts and the winning bag would be around 16 to 17kgs. Till next time chow!!

Thanks for the report, those kind of days are really frustrating, but it happens to all of us at some point or the other.

We left home at 04H00. Also arrived at the dam to find no queues and a very quick launch. With a 50 boat limit on the Gauteng BETT I was really pi.. off to pull number 49 for a start. We started in the bay before the river on the right on the outside of the grass. Then into the river and again back on the outside on the left hand side. We were there to see Mumro catch his 1st keeper. Tried to call him several times on the number he supplied on JV101 but no aswer. We stayed for a while and my partner lost a fish on a dropshot. We then went to the salad bowl and was next to Team Gheko when they caught their 1st keeper. We then fished that area with them for the next hour with only them picking up a barbel on the spinnerbait. We now moved to the main dam next to the spilway and again nothing happend for the next 45 min. The time now 14H15. Running back to the Salad bowl to where I caught my fish on the previous BETT and for the 1st time this area was available to be fished. No boats within +- 100 meters. Again Braam lost a fish on a Green Pumpkin Senko. I have been using the spinnerbait the whole day with a Chart/white skirt. I changed this now to a Green pumpkin/Brown skirt and with my next cast picked up our 1st keeper for the day 450gr. a Minute or 2 later Braam landed one on the Senko 1Kg. a Cast or 2 later I was into a nice keeper 1.5Kg. As I put this fish into the Livewell it turned onto its back and then it was a rush to get out of the grass and to get this fish to the scales. Coming back from the Scales there was a boat on out sweetspot and thus no more fish for us. Could have been a Shitty day with a Mombakkies but also than it could have been a lot better with 5 keepers. Now we are in between with 3 fish 2.96Kg.
Discussing the day with Team Gheko after the weigh-inn they mentioned to us that the fish started biting about 10 minutes after we left and also a little bit shallower than what we were fishing with them. If you think that they caught their 1st keeper in 5-7 ft then we can assume that the others was 3-5 ft. They also mentioned that they missed a lot of fish because when they fished in the grass and sometimes when the grass was so thick that it forces the spinnerbait to the top, the fish will come crashing in after it missing the bait. We also noticed that quite a few of the boats finishing in the top 10 ended their day in the shallows (2-3ft water). The water for the most part of the day was 12.6 C and the clouds came in at 10H00 leaving us without sun for the rest of the day
Again a big point for us was the 2 fish lost by Braam. At a average of the fish for the BETT for the day (1Kg), It cost us dearly and again it was all on Fluro. The 1st on was a leader on a dropshot (Superline) and the 2nd was straight Fluro and a Split shot rig. Both times the line (AND NOT A KNOT) went. I am looking for a Good Kopdokter and I need him fast.
