Two Man Challenge
One compo I enjoy fishing each year is the Midmar Two Man Challenge... it’s hosted and run by Ladysmith Bass Club and Norman Hills. It’s a laid back social compo and entry fee is a mere R200 per team! The prizes are all sponsored and the first prize is normally an awesome fishing trip... this year the prize was a trip to the Okavango. Goodies bags are given and contain some sponsored products like Powerade, Oil and the free t-shirt! It’s a team event at Midmar and at this time of the year the fishing is ALWAYS hard... this year was no exception and added to that it was really hot!
The rule of thumb is that if you get bag (5) both days you should be in the prizes and the fish size is 250mm! Last year Howie and I got bag both days and ended 10th... this year we managed to get bag both days and just lost out on the prizes by a few grams!
There were about 60 boats this year which is less than last year... but the compo was well run and this year they had a food stand which was sorely missed last year...
We toiled from the start (12:00 Saturday) and it was as hot as hell and had I not had my umbrella I would have had to get off the water... we didn’t get a single bite until 16:00 (day one ended at 18:00) and Howie’s Fluke and my Squirrel tails accounted for our bag on day one. As always there was lots of whining about how tough the fishing was... Pieter on his 21’ Triton broke his PB on day one with a 3,79kg pig but unfortunately that was his only fish of the weekend... But at least he won the biggest fish prize.
Day one ended with a heavy storm and it was a welcome relief from the heat but those big raindrops sting like nothing on earth at 100km/h! I had a brandy and coke with Fab, Peeps and Pieter before hitting the sack early... Howie stayed up talking till the early house of the morning... Piet and Peeps paid the price the next day when the sun came out again with vengeance!
Day Two started at 5:30 and the cool air was a short lived welcome... the sun came out and the heat went through the roof again... The Fluke and Squirrel tail got our bag early and a Blue Creature Bait CBC rigged accounted for our only Inanda Keeper of the compo...
We’ll be back next year!
