Well it was time for our last ESA event of the year, and I was very dissapointed that ESA had canned Goedertrouw which has been fishing very well. Just to think of the big $$$ they would have to pay out if anglers qualified for the 5kg bonuses
An early morning call from Louis warned us about some accidents en route (dankie), and as we passed the turn off to Alberts, I still joked with Cameron that we should bunk Midmar and rather fish Alberts as my dismal record at Midmar is three outings, 2 fish for a bag total of 400g.
Arrived at the dam without a real game plan, and started fishing the shoreline next to the yacht club flanked on each side by Louis and John. After about 20 min, we left for a rocky point that I liked the last time we fished there. On arrival at the point, another boat approached from the opposite side, but I stopped and cast out my trusty jig head with a watermelon red trickworm. On the third cast, I felt the jighead hit some brush at about 20 ft and next thing felt the tap. I set the hook and realised that this was a good fish. When it jumped, my heart skipped 40 beats as it was BIG. Cameron handled the net like a pro and we rushed to the weigh station. She weighed in at 3.98kg and beat my old PB from Alberts by 8 grams.
Determined to not be a one fish wonder, we went back to the spot but to no avail. Run and gun was next and after chatting to John we went to the dam wall, where Cameron got a non weigher on some rocks with a brushog that he had rigged on the jighead. It must have been around 13:00 when we went to a bay with big trees (no sure of the name). I looked at my Eagle and saw what looked like cut off tree stumps in 20-30ft. Cameron was still throwing the jighead brush hog, and to be honest I just chuckled to myselfNext thing I heard Cam shout, "I'm on dad". He fought his fish and the Citica's drag worked like a dream. It was my turn for net duty and I saw he had hooked a 2kg+ fish. The fish started turning so it was off the to weigh station again, where he proudly weighed in his first fish of the season as a junior. The fished weighed 2.1kg. Grateful that the "one fish wonder" self inflicted label had been erased, we went back to the same spot and next thing Cam shouted "I'm on dad". Net duty for me again, but believe me I wasn't complaining
The fish weighed 1.5kg. I managed another 500g keeper on spro lipless just before we packed it in.
I was expecting some big bags as if we were catching then others should too, but was pleasantly surprised to hear our names not called out when second place was announcedWe managed a 8kg odd bag for a 4 fish bag.
I wish to mention that I take my hat off to my partner and son, who has fished both ESA and BETT comps with me this year. For a 12 year old to spend hours and hours on the water, cast after cast he did start feeling dejected. I continually reminded him that his day will come. His day eventually arrived and what a proud dad I am.
I would also like to use this opportunity to thank the guys (you know who you are) who have been there with positive support and have shared so much of their local knowledge in our first year Bassing in KZN.

) I'm sure that in the future were all gonna be taking fishing lessons from Cameron and Connor. Two awesome Laaities!

I told them to keep some for you, but they refused!!
I knew that stuff had magic powers.
